Jarrett Butler

Originally from Mansfield he started to play the trombone in his local Brass Band at the age of 12. After studying with Douglas Wilkie at Clarendon College in Nottingham Jarrett continued his musical education at the Royal Northern College of Music, Manchester (1988-1992) where his teachers included Andrew Berryman ,Christopher Houlding and visiting professors including, Ian Bousfield, Eric Crees, Christian Lindberg and Denis Wick.

Jarrett has worked with many of the leading British Orchestras including the Halle Orchestra, City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, BBC National Orchestra of Wales, Opera North and the Orchestra of Scottish Opera

Jarrett has also held the position of Solo Trombone with the Grimethorpe Colliery Brass Band from 1991 to 1992 which included their National Finals win at the Royal Albert Hall.

In 1993 Jarrett became the Principal Trombone of the Portuguese Symphony Orchestra (Sao Carlos Opera House, Lisbon, Portugal) of which he is still a member. In January of 2020 Jarrett was invited to be a soloist with the PSO performing the European premiere of Dream for Trombone,Harp and Orchestra by Andrew Cadima, written for Achilles Liarmakopoulos of the Canadian Brass Quintet.. Jarrett has also been invited Guest Principal Trombone with the Gulbenkian Orchestra, Lisbon and the Symphony Orchestra of Porto (Casa da Musica).Jarrett regularly gives master classes on Solo, Orchestral and Chamber music in Europe and South America both as a solo artist and also as a member of the Lisbon Brass Quintet.

Jarrett is currently Professor of Trombone and Chamber Music at the University of Aveiro. Between 2006 and 2010 Jarrett was the Professor of Euphonium and Chamber at the University of Evora and also Professor of Orchestral Studies and Chamber Music at the Superior Academy of Orchestral Studies (Metropolitana de Lisboa).

Jarrett is also an arranger/composer for Scherzo Editions with a variety of works for differing formations. These publications include arrangements and original compositions for Orchestral Brass Section,Trombone Ensemble, Brass Quintet, Wind Band, Brass Band, and Cello Ensemble. The original composition for Brass Quintet and percussion “ A Portrait of Lisbon” has recently recorded by the GMS Quintet on their album Portuguese Music for Brass.
