Magnesdatter Åsbø, *(my middle name means I am Magne's daughter).
I am from Visnes / Avaldsnes, the Viking town on the west coast of Norway.
I started playing cornet when I was 9, after 1 whole year of recorder,
The reason was because dad Magne played trombone and mom Mariann played cornet in 1 div. When I was 12, Avaldsnes school band conductors Dag Engedal and Karl Børge Ask invited me to the soprano chair, so I switched from Bb cornet in one piece and to playing soprano in the next at a church concert. I think brass bands are fantastic, you can sit and play with people from all over the world, because everyone understands/plays the same musical language.
My first adult brass band was Stangaland Brass, lovely people excellent band and
where I met Simon Kerwin and Alexandra Foy*(now Kenyon). Alex became my cornet teacher.
In 2016 I was invited to IBBSS, a summer school in Wales, met Richard Marshall, Tom Hutchinson, Chris Turner, Owen Farr, Gary Curtin, Matthew Routley, Brett Baker and of course Prof. Nickolas Childs and Alison Childs. All are now good friends of mine. I have been to IBBSS 5 times, with 2026 being my sixth.
Music has always given me strength and hope, also Christmas- 21, a few years ago when I was fighting cancer. I received a piece
of music in my email, from Mike Kilmartin in 2022, he had heard me play via
Facebook. "To you I offer my heart", was written to me. And it was
about never giving up, never stopping fighting and never losing hope.
I have recently joined Avaldsnes Brass and Kopervik
Music Corps, to meet old friends again- It’s so nice.
In 2023 I won the Global Soprano Challenge, with a
James Bond medley.
Nice to be the underdog, only 2 women and 21 men. World Champion 2023.
In 2024 I won again, against 34 in the global challenge soprano competition. Here I played my own arrangement on soprano "Chevalier de Sangreal" from the Da Vinci Code. So double World Champion 24, with MB-PR1.
In 2024 my friend Terje Pedersen asked me to join
the first Eb quartet in the world. Fjordvegr.no with Anne Kristine Borgund
Johannesen, Terje Pedersen, Christopher Sæbø, and me are all on Mercer and Barker Mouthpieces MB3 Eb tuba, MB2-H, MB3-H, MB - PR1.
I played in the Bergen Brass Band, a beautiful band, for 3 years.
A band with many young school band members who won
titles in the Palanga European Championship 24.
And I would like to say thank you to the wonderful
Maestro Thor-Arne Pedersen for everything you have taught me and everything you have endured ♡
In January I was contacted by Leigh Baker, Maestro of
Marsden Prize Silver Band, to join them in the Championship section of the
Regionals, on soprano. Wow a big moment - #bucketlist.
And a big thank you to Malc and Kathleen Coton,
Alison Childs and Prof. Nick Childs for a fantastic time!!
I am thrilled to be invited to the Mercer & Barker family - Wow !!!
THANK YOU ❤️
I am also a Norwegian artist and ambassador for the
mouthpieces, feel free to contact me and try them out anytime.
