George Mitchell
BBb Bass with The Fodens Band
George started playing at the age of 7 on percussion for ‘Besses Boys band’ who were a fourth section band at the time. He continued to play with Besses Boys for a further 10 years moving through lots of different instruments and up to the second section until he finally found himself on Bb bass, then after a year of playing bass re auditioned for the National Youth Brass Band on bass (previously he was in the band on baritone) and on his first course playing bass he was appointed the ‘joint principal seat’ and then held the principal seat for the remainder of his time in the band. Due to this he was then asked to go and play for Elland silver band where he spent two years playing for the first time ever in a championship section band. In November of 2019 George was approached by mark Wilkinson to join Fodens which was an offer he said he obviously couldn’t turn down and since the moment of joining the band has loved every second of it and has said ‘it is great to be sat next to Andy Catt as he has taught me so much about playing and coming to band twice a week is like having free lessons just from listening to him play.’ And continued with ‘I have always struggled with finding the right mouthpiece and was swapping and changing depending on what mood I was in and I was never fully confident in the mouthpieces I was playing on but now that I play on a Mercer & Barker MB5 this is definitely not the case.’
